Position Description – Director of Accounting

Introduction:  New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (“NOAHH”) seeks a skilled and experienced financial professional with strong management and operational skills to fill a challenging senior position within a dynamic organization engaged in the rebuilding of New Orleans. 

New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity:  Founded in 1983, NOAHH is the largest and most active homebuilder in the city post-Katrina.  By the end of 2007, NOAHH expects to be the largest Habitat operation in the United States.  Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, NOAHH builds simple, decent houses in partnership with low-income families. Habitat houses are sold at no profit and financed with affordable, no-interest loans.  The non-profit organization is managed by a local volunteer board comprised of eminent individuals from different backgrounds.  NOAHH employs a staff of 70 members and engages numerous long-term volunteers. 

NOAHH’s Mission Statement guides the organization’s work:  To build houses in partnership with sponsors, volunteers, communities, and homeowner families, whereby families are empowered to transform their own lives and to eliminate poverty housing in the New Orleans area while serving as a catalyst to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.

Job Description:  The Director of Accounting will manage six-member finance and accounting department responsible for all aspects of NOAHH’s financial operations.  These duties include, but are not limited to, budgeting, cash flow management, investment of cash balances, accounts payable, construction spending and mortgage receivables.  The Director of Accounting will report directly to NOAHH’s Deputy Director and will have regular interaction with NOAHH’s board of directors principally through its Finance Committee. 

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of ten years of related experience in positions demonstrating progressive experience and responsibility.  A business degree from an accredited college or university is required, as is a CPA certification.  Related experience with non-profit organizations, construction activities, banking and capital markets transactions and/or mortgages is a plus.

In addition, the Director of Accounting duties include:

  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects
  • Ability to motivate team members to produce quality results under critical time constraints
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills
  • Strategic and operational planning
  • Fiscal and operational oversight
  • Preparation of monthly financial reports and annual (GAAP) financial statements
  • Regular interaction with external audit team

Demonstrated experience working in team environments and a strong working knowledge of accounting software is a must.  The Director of Accounting must also be able to effectively communicate and coordinate with other NOAHH departments.   A polished and professional style appropriate to working with financial professionals as NOAHH representative is also required.
